how to Prep your wall
Get Ready for a Stunning Wallpaper or Mural Installation! Are you excited to transform your walls with a beautiful new wallpaper or mural? Before you start, let's make sure your surface is ready for a flawless finish! The key to a successful installation is a clean, smooth, firm, and dry surface. Follow our simple checklist to ensure a fantastic result.
The Prep Work
Cleanliness is key
Before you begin wallpapering, move any obstacles away from the walls. Wallpapering is hard enough. Don’t make it more difficult by having a bunch of stuff in your way. Give your walls a good clean using warm water and a sponge. Add a mild soap or a special cleaning agent designed for paint prep. This will remove any dirt, grime, or old adhesive that might interfere with your new wallpaper or mural.
Fix those imperfections
Remove any old nails, hangers, or screws and fill in the holes and cracks. Sand down rough edges until smooth. If there's old wallpaper with overlapping edges, trim them away for a flat surface.
make sure your walls are Dry and stable
Allow your walls to dry completely for at least 24 hours. It's Important to check that no areas rise when damp and don't stretch back once dry.
Textured walls
If your walls have a textured surface, like orange peel or knockdown, you might need to apply a skim coat or primer to even out the surface. For Peel & Stick wallpapers, textured walls are not suitable, so make sure to prepare your surface accordingly.
Dark colors or patterns
If your old wall color is dark or has a strong pattern, consider painting it a neutral light color to prevent it from showing through your new wallpaper or mural.
Uneven walls
If your wall is uneven due to the original wall texture, like knockdown, orange peel, or woodworm, we usually recommend applying a skim coat or primer to even out the surface. However, whether it's necessary depends on the roughness of the texture and the aesthetics you're going for.
the final touches
Switch off and remove
Turn off the electricity and take out the covers to all sockets and switches
Prime for success
Consider using a special wallpaper primer to create a matte surface with a little extra slip when moving and positioning your wallpaper during installation. This will also make it easier to remove your wallpaper in full strips later on.
By following these simple steps, you'll be ready to enjoy a stunning new wallpaper or mural that will transform your space!
